Between all the fanfare and carpets, glitter and gold, the Grammy Awards honored music industry giants who died recently.

Accompanied by a five-piece band, Chris Martin of Coldplay sang the band’s “All My Love” as a tribute to artists like Liam Payne and Toby Keith.

The “In Memoriam” began with videos of the late One Direction bandmate, who died in October at age 31 after falling from a Buenos Aires, Argentina, hotel balcony. Five people have been charged in connection with Payne’s death.

One Direction fans took to social media to express their gratitude at the touching tribute to the “Night Changes” singer. In the video, Payne is shown horsing around with a large outdoor crowd and his bandmates, encouraging the fans to quiet their screaming and then raise the volume all the way back up. In another clip, he hugs a wall of fan art.

“We’ve done some amazing things,” Payne says in one clip, smiling.

“the tribute to liam really has me bawling :(( seeing stuff like this and it still just doesn’t even feel real,” one fan wrote on X.

Martin’s tribute performance ended with a photo of Keith, who also died in 2024. The country singer died in February after a battle with stomach cancer. He was 62.

Other artists honored included “For the Good Times” singer Kris Kristofferson, rapper Rich Homie Quan, Cissy Houston and Marianne Faithfull, who died just last week.

Earlier in the night, the Grammys also honored the late music producer Quincy Jones with a nearly 20-minute tribute that included performances by Cynthia Erivo (“Fly Me to the Moon”), Stevie Wonder (“We Are the World”) and Janelle Monáe, who wore an “I Heart QJ” shirt under a Michael Jackson-esque outfit as she sang “Don’t Stop ’til You Get Enough.”
